Jogging Strollers For Fitness-Minded Parenting

Posted on Thursday, May 6, 2010 in Strollers

Fitness minded parents of infants and toddlers who want to stay in shape, or mom’s who want to get back into shape after having a baby, might want to invest in jogging strollers to bring their babies along with them. Single jogging strollers, designed for transporting one child, have been around for a few decades now and have only improved with the years.

Typical jogging strollers have three large wheels typically with rubber tires. These help to stabilize the stroller as you run or jog along the pavement. There are two wheels in the back and usually one in the front. The shape of the jogging stroller is more like the tip of an arrow, or a triangle pointing away from the jogger. The child’s seating area or nearer the handle is wider than where the baby’s feet are. This helps to cut through the air when running or jogging. This design also gives the baby plenty of room to lie down.

Jogging strollers are made of durable tubing and a woven, breathable, washable material stretched over the tubing. There are jogging strollers with a fixed front wheel and some have a swivel front wheel. The, often single, fixed front wheel strollers help to maintain a straight line while you run or jog. The wide spacing of the back tires help you handle the bumps in the road as you jog along. Many of the newer single jogging strollers offer a swivel front wheel and provide a latch that allows you to put the tire in a ‘fixed’ position for exercising. This way you can use the jogging stroller for other outings besides just exercising and jogging.

Jogging strollers come in various shapes and sizes. There is the typical, triangular style which is best for long distance runners and those training for marathons; then there are the jogging strollers that look more like a typical stroller except they are more rugged and can handle more of a punishing trail or off-road type workout.

Though single jogging strollers offer a relatively lightweight solution for running with one infant or toddler, there are jogging strollers built for two, either twins or two small children, or even three children. Both the double and triple jogging strollers are built to last and have a double front wheel which helps with maneuverability. Each seating section can be moved independently of the other so if one child is tired, he or she can lie down while the other two sit up and enjoy the ride.

All of the jogging strollers come with a visor or shade to help keep the children from getting over exposed by the sun, and safety straps to keep them in place while you are jogging and in case of a spill, the babies will be locked into the jogging stroller, which is clearly safer than being thrown from the stroller.

Jogging strollers can be used for everyday stroller use and not just for jogging, running or exercising. They can be taken out on a trail or to the mall or the park. They are versatile and really help you enjoy the time you spend with your baby.

Jogging Stroller Buying Guide

Posted on Saturday, May 1, 2010 in Strollers

You’re in the market for your first Jogging Stroller, but you don’t know where to begin. In my mind, there are five key points you need to look at in order to start looking for that perfect jogging stroller.

Step 1: Determine your Use for the Stroller: Jogging, Running, Everyday Stroller or all of the above?

These are good question’s to define right at the start because the answers to these questions will narrow your search. If you are looking for a stroller for use in all daily application’s as well as jogging, you may want to look at a stroller with a front swivel wheel that locks so when you are trying to do a tight turn in the mall you can, or if you are jogging, you can lock the front wheel for ease of use. The Baby Jogger City Series is a good all-around stroller. If you are just looking for a dedicated jogging stroller, you wouldn’t want a swivel wheel and may want a few more features in your stroller. The Bob Deluxe Sport Utility Stroller is a great dedicated jogging stroller as it provides more shock absorption for your baby during your runs.

Step 2: Determine your Price Range: Money Talks $$$

After step 1, you will immediately want to figure out your price range before going any further. Jogging Strollers can cost you around $100 all the way up to $500 or more so it’s a good idea to know your budget and stick with it. Of course the more expensive strollers give you more features, better suspension, ease of transport, but you can also find great strollers for around the $100 mark if that’s your budget. Just last year the Baby Trend Expedition Stroller was voted #1 as the best buy for lower priced strollers (approx $100). If you have a bit more you can spend, Maclaren Strollers give you features galore with adjustable safety bar, multiple positions for your baby to recline, and an adjustable arm rest.

Step 3: Size Does Matter

You know your stroller type, you know your budget, now you need to dig into the details of the product and make sure that your stroller fits your baby. Every jogging stroller is made to hold up to a certain weight whether its up to 30 lbs or up to 50 lbs. How long you would like your jogging stroller to fit your baby plays a very important role in the max weight the jogging stroller is build for. For example the Bob Ironman stroller max capacity is 70 lbs vs. the Schwinn Free Runner stroller max capacity is 50 lbs. Do your homework and check the specs on the jogging strollers you are looking at.

Step 4: Wheel Size

Stroller Wheels come in 12″, 16″ and 20″. The bigger the wheel the tougher they are. If you are planning on light jogging a 12″ wheel will suit you just fine, if you will be doing more intense running or off pavement running, you need to look at 16″ or 20″ wheels. If you are looking at a double stroller, think about going up a wheel size for more stability for your little ones. A good rule of thumb: the more intense terrain, the bigger the wheel.

Step 5: Accessorize

When you buy your jogging stroller, its good to look at any Jogging Stroller Accessories you may need to go with your stroller. There are all types of accessories from bug nets to sun visors and complete covers for the winter. Like all products, some stroller models will go out of style so its good to buy your accessories soon after your jogging stroller purchase to avoid compatibility problems when models change.

Happy Jogging.

Choosing the Right Jogging Pet Stroller

Posted on Thursday, April 29, 2010 in Strollers

I recently saw someone biking through the park with a bike trailer. I assumed they were pulling their kid, much to my surprise it was actually their golden retriever.

I thought it was a bit ridiculous, but quickly realized it’s a very safe alternative. Riding your bike with a dog on a leash is very dangerous, not only for the dog, but for the bike rider as well. In this day and age of rising gas prices more and more people are riding their bikes. If you want to safely take your dog to the park, or the vet or just about anywhere and do it on your bike a pet bike trailer is the perfect choice in pet strollers.

There are a few choices when it comes to pet bike trailers. They are sturdy and safe, the decision will come with the options, and the size of your pet (and if you have more than one). And of course what you are willing to spend.

The three main brands of bike pet strollers are Solvit, ePet, and Pet Ego. They each have their benefits and drawbacks.

All the bike pet strollers come with a way to attach them to your bike, and have extra hitches available, if you have more than one bike. What they don’t all come with is the jogger kit. If you plan to use your bike pet stroller as a jogging stroller as well you want to make sure you get a model that includes this feature for free.

The Premium ePet includes a free jogger kit, and runs about the same price as the Solvit Dog Bike Trailer which does NOT come with a jogger kit. There is one available, but it is an extra feature you have to purchase. The Pet Ego bike trailer also comes with a jogger kit, but you will find it is much more expensive than the other two brands.

You will also want to make sure the bike pet stroller you choose is rated for the weight of your pet. Generally the medium supports up to 45 pounds, in both the Solvit and the ePet. The large Solvit dog bike trailer supports up to 115 pounds and the Premium ePet bike trailers support 100lbs. The Pet Ego is by far the largest available dog bike trailer, it can hold more than one dog and will support up to 165 pounds.

The prices for these bike pet strollers is more than a regular pet stroller, but when you realize it will play double duty (if not triple) the price can be justified.

If you are biking more and want to include your dog, make sure you buy one of the quality bike pet strollers available that will fit your dog and provide you the features you need.

The jogging baby stroller is a necessity for today’s active parents. Modern strollers are a perfect combination of comfort and functionality, and of course, safety.  A jogging baby stroller not only makes your baby feel comfortable and safe but also offers you the convenience to exercise with your child. So, what’s on the market today?

When it comes to baby strollers, convenience matters a lot. It is natural that you don’t want to spend half an hour trying to pack the stroller into your car and then spend another half an hour to set up the stroller and get your baby strapped in. Here are some safety features to consider;

A modern Jogging baby stroller will assure that your baby will be comfortable while sitting in it as well as being safe. These strollers fulfill the requirements of both the parents and the baby.

Cost;

The reclining seats are very comfortable and your baby can sit up or even sleep whenever he or she feels sleepy. These strollers also have adjustable foot rests so that you can adjust them when your baby begins to grow.

Brands on the Market today;

This is one of the coolest things about shopping for a jogging baby stroller today, the variety. The market is full of top name brand products and varieties. The competition has also made the prices more affordable without compromising on safety or quality. Top name brands are; Graco, Schwinn, Instep and Saftey1st.
